aXess Homescm is a certification program designed to encourage builders of single-family homes to voluntarily implement aXess Homescm features, which make a home cost effective, attractive, accessible, visitable and convenient for everyone. Whether it is strollers, grocery carts, wheelchairs, 330-pound football players or heavy furniture and equipment, all will move easily in an aXess Homescm. The sale and resale value of a home is enhanced when it contains aXess Homescm features.
aXess Homescm features are:
Easy Access with a step-free entrance from a driveway, sidewalk or other firm route into the central living area.
Easy Passage because the exterior door and EVERY interior passage door on the main level is at least 32 inches of clear passage space.
Easy Use with no less than a bedroom, a kitchen, an entertainment area, and a full bathroom with sufficient maneuvering space on the main floor.
Mission
The aXess Homescm program is a voluntary certification program, created by a coalition of diverse organizations with a mutual goal of creating homes with basic access that are cost effective, attractive, visitable and convenient for everyone.
History
In early 1999, the aXess Homescm program was started through the efforts of a joint venture between the disability community and the Home Builders Association of Georgia in Georgia. Since the inception, over 580 homes have been certified in the state. In 2005, the program expanded to West Virginia, New Hampshire, and Texas. Texas became the third affiliate in October of 2005. The aXess Homescm affiliate certified its first home in March of 2006.
