A local home-building company is aiming to tap a niche market that could grow by designing homes for people with disabilities.
Blue Ribbon Homes is completing what will be El Paso's first home certified for visitor accessibility by people with disabilities. Compared with a more traditional home, the Blue Ribbon home, in the Laguna Meadows community on the West Side, has wider hallways and doorways, lower light switches, higher electrical outlets and entryway ramps instead of steps. It is not considered fully equipped for a resident with disabilities but could be easily modified for that purpose.
We actually have decided as a company to really put an emphasis on building homes of this nature, easy-access homes," said Steve Tullius, Blue Ribbon's president.
He explained that as the baby boomer population ages, the decision also makes business sense.
"It's just a market out there that's in great demand," Tullius said.
It's also a market that will grow once consumers become aware of it, said Tajauna Arnold, director of the Easy Living Homecm Texas program, the group that certified Blue Ribbon's home.
