In 1990, less than three percent of Americans lived in homes with any kind of accessibility feature. Yet, almost 30 percent of families contained at least one member with a disability.
With the baby boomer generation reaching retirement age and the realization that accessibility features apply to everyone, home accessibility, specifically visitability, is becoming an accepted, often expected, practice by home owners across the nation.
Just as the curb cut was once thought to only benefit those with disabilities, the housing industry is now observing the same thought paradigm shift in housing accessibility. Home accessibility affects EVERYONE who enters the home. Features that were once thought only to be enjoyed by those with mobility impairments are now favored by one and all: those wanting to age-in-place, grandparents visiting family during the holidays, the mother with a stroller, teenagers on crutches, as well as, those who like the open feel visitability provides.
Since 1999, EasyLiving Homecm has been at the leading edge of the transition in construction practices and thought. The voluntary visitability certification program, formed by home builder organizations and disability advocates, will aid in fighting the crisis that is coming with the baby boomer generation combined with the recent devastation caused by the hurricanes in 2005.
